SEATTLE—Group Health Research Institute senior investigator and Group Health pediatrician and medical director for preventive care and population strategy David C. Grossman, MD, MPH, has been appointed vice chair of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF or Task Force). Dr. Grossman was appointed to this position by the director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and his term will begin in March 2015.
“Group Health is honored to congratulate Dr. David Grossman on this prestigious new appointment,” said Eric B. Larson, MD, MPH, executive director of Group Health Research Institute and Group Health’s vice president for research. “We are proud of his previous work as a member of the Task Force, and look forward to all that the Task Force will accomplish under his leadership as vice chair and later as chair.”
While serving in this new role with the Task Force, Dr. Grossman will continue in his positions at Group Health and the University of Washington (UW). He is also a professor of health services at the UW School of Public Health and adjunct professor of pediatrics at the UW School of Medicine.
“We are honored to have Dr. Grossman return to the Task Force in a leadership role,” said Task Force chair, Michael LeFevre, MD, MSPH. “His dedication to primary care, prevention, and evidence-based medicine was clear during his term as a member of the Task Force. In addition, the work that Dr. Grossman has done with the Community Preventive Services Task Force will bring important insights about community-level prevention to the USPSTF.”
The Task Force is an independent, volunteer panel of national experts in prevention and evidence-based medicine. Members come from many health-related fields, including internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, behavioral health, obstetrics/gynecology, and nursing.
Dr. Grossman previously served as a member of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force from January 2008 to December 2013. He is a board-certified pediatrician recognized for his research on injury prevention and Native American health. He serves on the Community Preventive Services Task Force (CPSTF), the sister panel of the USPSTF, which makes recommendations about the effectiveness of preventive services at the community level. He recently concluded several terms on the Board of Scientific Counselors for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. Dr. Grossman has been awarded numerous awards for his research and advocacy on behalf of Native American children, oral health, and injury prevention. His current research focuses on innovations to improve the uptake and delivery of clinical preventive services in primary care.
