Collaborate with Us

Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute has a long history of successful collaboration on research studies with a wide range of partners.

Ali Thomas, MD, of Washington Permanente Medical Group, speaks at a faculty meeting of the institute.

Through research collaborations, Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute (KPWHRI) is discovering practical ways to deliver high-quality, affordable health care. We bring experience, competence, and unique capabilities for high-impact results.

Study collaborations

Our strengths include experience in large epidemiologic studies, randomized trials, and pragmatic clinical trials — finding answers to important questions within real-world populations.

KPWHRI’s primary collaborators include:

  • Researchers outside of Kaiser Permanente
  • Kaiser Permanente clinicians and researchers

Whether you are affiliated with Kaiser Permanente or not, the first step to collaborating with KPWHRI on a research study is to identify and partner with a KPWHRI researcher in your area of interest. They will help assess the feasibility of your project and guide you through the steps involved.

For information on KPWHRI research areas and investigators, visit our research area pages and our directory of scientists. Once you have identified the researcher you would like to collaborate with, you can contact them directly.

All studies involving Kaiser Permanente Washington members or their data must include a KPWHRI investigator. This collaboration ensures that proposed projects are consistent with Kaiser Permanente Washington policies and that any potential effects on the care-delivery system are addressed.

Please note that the use of Kaiser Permanente data is prohibited for any for-profit purposes.

Other collaborations and services

There are also several other opportunities for collaboration with KPWHRI experts.

  • Biostatistics: The Biostatistics Division provides expert biostatistical collaboration to promote high-quality evidence generation from clinical trials and observational studies, especially those that leverage real-world electronic health care data sources. The large team of PhD- and MS-trained biostatisticians engages across the entire life cycle of a study to provide leadership in grant writing, study design, new methods development, data management, safety monitoring, statistical analysis planning, complex analyses, and statistical reporting.

  • CCHE: The Center for Community Health and Evaluation at KPWHRI designs and evaluates health-related programs and initiatives throughout the United States.

  • ACT Center: The ACT Center accelerates the adoption of evidence-based practices by designing, implementing, and evaluating innovations that benefit Kaiser Permanente Washington members, care teams, and communities.

  • Survey Research Program: The Survey Research Program provides a broad range of data collection and recruitment services. The team of scientific survey professionals consults on survey methods and operations and works in close collaboration with study teams to plan and execute recruitment and survey data collection activities.

The process to work with KPWHRI can vary, depending on the type of collaboration that’s right for each project. Please plan ahead and allow sufficient time for your request and proposal to be evaluated by KPWHRI.

We look forward to hearing from you!
