KPWHRI presents at AcademyHealth’s Dissemination and Implementation in Health Conference

KPWHRI scientific staff presented key findings this month at the 11^th Annual Conference on the Science of Dissemination and Implementation in Health (#DIScience18) in Washington, DC. 

Co-hosted by the National Institutes of Health and AcademyHealth, this gathering aims to bridge the gaps between research, practice, and policy by ensuring that the work of improving the health of individuals and communities is firmly grounded in evidence. This year’s theme: “Scaling Up Effective Health and Healthcare: Advancing the Research Agenda and Necessary Infrastructure.”

KPWHRI scientific staff and their collaborators chaired three panels and two workshops, presented multiple posters and publications, and served as speakers or discussants in special sessions and workshops across the 3-day event. KPWHRI research highlighted includes, among other projects:

• Two pre-conference workshops on orientation to the science of dissemination and implementation with Cara C. Lewis;

• Pragmatic Trial of a Multi-Component Intervention in Primary Care to Implement Alcohol-Related Care: Partnered research to create wins for patients, clinicians, leaders, and science with Katharine Bradley;

• How learning health systems can make real the promise of embedded pragmatic research with Leah Tuzzio and Katie Coleman;

• The sustained program of alcohol-related care (SPARC) trial: Simultaneous implementation of behavioral health integration to improve the relative value of the innovation with Joseph E. Glass, Amy Lee, Julie Richards, Paula Lozano, Gwen Lapham, Jennifer Bobb, and Katharine Bradley; and

• De-implementing long-term opioids for chronic pain: Results of a clinical trial with Michael Parchman and Robert Penfold. 

For more than three decades, AcademyHealth has advanced the field of health services research by serving as an objective broker of information. Like KPWHRI, AcademyHealth is committed to freely offering information and resources to the public, making this conference an ideal venue for sharing Kaiser Permanente’s implementation science expertise.

Metabolic and bariatric surgery society honors David Arterburn

KPWHRI Senior Investigator and KPWA physician David Arterburn, MD, MPH, was recently selected as an honorary fellow of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). The fellowship is given to “professionals who have made notable and outstanding contributions to the field of metabolic and bariatric surgery not only through their work, but through their demonstrated commitment to ASMBS and its mission.”  ASMBS presented the award to Dr. Arterburn at a reception at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville, TN, on November 13.
