Coley receives emerging leader award 

Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute (KPWHRI) Assistant Investigator Yates Coley, PhD, was recognized as an Emerging Leader by the Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies. The award honors Coley for "impactful statistical contributions in the areas of ethical clinical prediction model development and learning health systems science," as well as leadership and advocacy in justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. KPWHRI attends health systems conference

KPWHRI was well represented at the Health Care Systems Research Network Annual Conference in February. KPWHRI Executive Director Rita Mangione-Smith, MD, MPH attended and presentations from the institute are highlighted in our feature story. Coauthors on the KPWHRI presentations were Rachael Burganowski, Maricela Cruz, Al Derus, Rachel Hays, Yonah Karp, Erika Kiniry, Kathleen Leppig, Roy Pardee, Taylor Ryan, Arvind Ramaprasan, Aaron Scrol, Gregory Simon, and Chris Stewart.

ACT Center team publishes top-cited paper

"A Roadmap to Operationalize and Evaluate Impact in a Learning Health System," published by a team from the Center for Accelerating Care Transformation (ACT Center), was recognized by Health Services Research as among the journal's top-cited papers. Authors of the publication were KPWHRI Manager of Collaborative Science Claire Allen, MPH, Katie Coleman, MSPH, Kayne Mettert, KPWHRI Senior Investigator Cara Lewis, PhD, Emily Westbrook, MHA, and KPWHRI Senior Investigator Paula Lozano, MD, MPH. Mettert was a KPWHRI research specialist and is now a University of Washington PhD student. Coleman, Westbrook, and Lozano direct the ACT Center.

Brown presents at preventive oncology meeting

At the March annual meeting of the American Society of Preventive Oncology, KPWHRI Collaborative Scientist Meagan Brown, PhD, MPH, spoke about work in social health by Kaiser Permanente and the Social Needs Network for Evaluation and Translation (SONNET). Brown's invited talk for the Disparities Special Interest Group was, "NCI Funding of Cancer-related Health Disparities and Unmet Social Needs.”

Matson and Glass present to Stanford group

KPWHRI Collaborative Scientist Tessa Matson, PhD, MPH, and Associate Investigator Joe Glass, PhD, MSW, presented in February to the Center for Dissemination & Implementation at Stanford (C-DIAS). Matson and Glass gave a virtual talk on their framework for designing trials evaluating the effectiveness and implementation of digital interventions for substance use to the C-DIAS Prevention Science & Methodology Group.

Lozano speaks to University of Minnesota

In March, KPWHRI Senior Investigator Paula Lozano, MD, MPH, who co-directs the Center for Accelerating Care Transformation, was invited to present to the University of Minnesota. Lozano spoke about training the next generation of learning health system scientists in the university's Center for Learning Health System Sciences iMpact seminar series.

Green presents on colorectal cancer

In early March, KPWHRI Senior Investigator Beverly Green, MD, MPH, was invited to give an in-person talk at the Western Colorectal Cancer Consortium Conference in Portland, Oregon. Green has conducted multiple studies on making colorectal cancer screening more equitable and easier for health care organizations and patients.

Lewis keynotes global summit

In February, Cara Lewis, PhD, KPWHRI senior investigator, was a keynote speaker for the Patient Safety 5th Global Ministerial Summit 2023 in Montreux, Switzerland. Lewis presented for the summit track on “Implementation Science From Theory to Practice.” The track focused on organizational and systems science perspectives to enhance patient safety.
