Expertise and leadership from Group Health clinicians and administrators have always been crucial to the success of the organization’s research. Now, Group Health Research Institute (GHRI) scientists are formally recognizing those who play this essential role by appointing them as “clinical associates” within the Institute.

GHRI named its first 21 clinical associates on October 1, a designation equivalent to an academic clinical faculty appointment offered by many universities.

“These colleagues offer their expertise for research studies, help facilitate projects in the system, and provide support for critical activities and infrastructure,” says Jennifer McClure, PhD, a GHRI senior investigator and director of research, faculty, and development. “Much of our science would not be possible without their involvement and commitment.”

Nominations for the appointment came from GHRI faculty members and were approved by Eric B. Larson MD, MPH, executive director of GHRI and vice president for research at Group Health.

“These strong, ongoing partnerships between our scientists and those named as clinical associates are a unique feature of Group Health’s strength as a research institution,” says Robert Reid, MD, PhD, a GHRI senior investigator and Group Health medical director for research translation.

“I feel honored to accept the appointment,” says Kim Riddell, MD, a Group clinical pathologist and medical director of Group Health Clinical Laboratories, who recently collaborated with GHRI researchers on a project to improve the diagnosis of urinary tract infections.  “I'm very impressed at the high level of research integrity and creativity I’ve seen with every project I’ve worked on, and I’m happy to keep working toward a great future for GHRI, our patients, and our community.”
