SONNET is a national network of applied researchers who help design, evaluate, and implement effective social health interventions to improve member health across Kaiser Permanente. SONNET's work is made possible with funding from KP's National Office of Community Health.
The federal government recognizes social needs specific to pregnancy and provides benefits and services, including expanded pregnancy Medicaid to address financial and health care needs, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) to address nutrition risk and food insecurity. Nonetheless, the health care community knows little about best practices in the process of screening pregnant women for social needs. Pregnant women report feeling vulnerable during pregnancy care. So it’s especially important to ensure that we work toward evaluating and meeting their social needs in ways that they find respectful of their autonomy and experiences.
Kaiser Permanente is committed to promoting social health among pregnant women. This study extends current knowledge by asking women directly about screening and referral preferences during pregnancy. The study will explore:
The study will also probe whether women who were referred for assistance with social needs accepted the offer for assistance, and if not, why. Results should both advance the literature on screening preferences and provide valuable information to KP about screening preferences in this population.
Nancy S. Weinfield, PhD, Principal Investigator, KP Mid-Atlantic States Mid-Atlantic Permanente Research Institute
Dr. Weinfield will review the literature on interventions to reduce social isolation for KP’s National Office of Community Health. Her efforts will focus on the different types of interventions, the populations the interventions are intended to serve, and the efficacy of different intervention approaches. She will emphasize the strengths and weaknesses of each intervention and will make a recommendation to KP about promising interventions to that could be considered for implementation.
