Jennifer Nelson, PhD, KPWHRI senior investigator and director of biostatistics, presented at the American College of Epidemiology national meeting in Pasadena, CA September 7-11. Dr. Nelson and Katherine Yih, PhD, from the Department of Population Medicine at Harvard Medical School, talked about design and analytic considerations for near-real time surveillance of real-world data in vaccine safety studies.
KPWHRI Senior Investigators Katharine Bradley, MD, MPH, and David Arterburn, MD, MPH, spoke on putting new evidence into practice at the annual meeting of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) annual meeting in Washington, D.C. September 18-20. Dr. Bradley presented on screening and management of unhealthy alcohol use in primary care. Dr. Arterburn spoke about his research on obesity and outcomes from bariatric surgery. He was also interviewed by Angela Smith, MS, MD, former PCORI Advisory Panel member.
A September Grand Rounds webinar from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Health Care Systems Research Collaboratory featured Diana Buist, PhD, MPH, KPWHRI senior investigator and senior director of research and strategic partnerships, and Rachel Winer, PhD, KPWHRI affiliate researcher. The NIH Collaboratory creates new infrastructure for collaborative research with health care systems and supports pragmatic clinical trials on public health issues. Drs. Buist and Winer presented their work on designing and testing home-based cervical cancer screening.
The 5th Biennial Society for Implementation Research Conference (SIRC) was held in Seattle, on the University of Washington (UW)campus, on September 12-14. KPWHRI speakers at the meeting were members of the MacColl Center for Health Care Innovation KPWHRI Senior Investigator Michael Parchman, MD, MPH; Associate Investigator Cara Lewis, PhD; Research Associate Lorella Palazzo, PhD; Research Specialists Kayne Mettert, Caitlin Dorsey, and Callie Walsh-Bailey, MPH; and Affiliate Researcher Bryan Weiner, PhD, of the UW Department of Global Health and Health Services.
The Sustained Patient-centered Alcohol-Related Care (SPARC) randomized trial aims to implement and maintain alcohol-related primary care. Three members of the SPARC team—KPWHRI Senior Investigator Kathy Bradley, MD, MPH, Research Associate Amy Lee, MPH, and Affiliate Researcher Emily Williams, PhD, MPH, VA Puget Sound Health Care System—presented at the International Network on Brief Interventions for Alcohol & Other Drugs
(INEBRIA) in Lübeck, Germany, in September. Drs. Bradley and Williams reported on main findings and evaluation results. Ms. Lee chaired the session and described the trial’s use of enhanced practice coaching. The team will also present about SPARC at the Addictions Health Services Research Conference in Utah in October.
