Sascha Dublin, MD, PhD, is now a member of the Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Dublin is a KPWHRI senior investigator and physician with the Washington Permanente Medical Group. As an FDA committee member, she will contribute to decisions about the safety and regulation of approved medications, advising the Commissioner of Food and Drugs on risk management, risk communication, and quantitative evaluation of products for which the FDA has regulatory responsibility.
Tessa Matson, MPH, a research interventionist at Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute (KPWHRI), was recognized with the prestigious Gilbert S. Omenn Award for Academic Excellence. The honor is from the University of Washington School of Public Health, where Matson is a PhD student, studying screening and assessment tools for substance use disorders. Her mentors include KPWHRI Senior Investigator Kathy Bradley, MD, MPH, and Associate Investigator Joe Glass, PhD, MSW. The award recognizes impact on and commitment to public health. Matson already has 26 publications focusing on patient-centric, equitable care for mental health and addiction.
Senior Investigator and former KPWHRI Executive Director Eric B. Larson, MD, MPH, was invited to serve a 3-year term on the Report Review Committee for the National Academy of Sciences. This committee oversees review of all reports from the National Academies to ensure their quality. All on the committee, including Larson, are members of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, or the National Academy of Medicine.
Kai Yeung, PharmD, PhD, KPWHRI assistant investigator, was invited to speak at the global conference of the Professional Society for Health Economics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) in Washington, DC, in May. Yeung, a pharmacist and pharmaceutical economist who studies patient medication-use behaviors, insurance design, and outcomes research, talked about his work on value-based pricing for prescription drugs in the U.S.
The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism developed a core resource on alcohol for clinicians. Several KPWHRI researchers served as reviewers and their research was cited to support the resource. Contributors from KPWHRI included Senior Investigator Kathy Bradley, MD, MPH, Associate Investigator Joe Glass, PhD, MSW, Evette Ludman, PhD (retired), and Affiliate Investigator Emily Williams, PhD, MPH.
Representatives of KPWHRI presented at the June Annual Research Meeting of AcademyHealth in Washington, DC. Senior Investigator Paula Lozano, MD, MPH, spoke about work by the Center for Accelerating Care Transformation that was selected from a contest about challenges and strategies for embedded research in real-world settings. Also attending was Collaborative Researcher Jessica Mogk, MPH. Senior Investigator James Ralston, MD, MPH, presented about data dashboards to address social determinants of health in care. For the journal Health Services Research, Chris Tachibana, PhD, KPWHRI scientific editor, was on a panel about academic publishing. Affiliate Investigator Joshua Liao, MD, MSc, gave 2 talks on the impact of bundled payment models.
