Bradley receives mentoring award
Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute Senior Investigator Kathy Bradley, MD, MPH, was the inaugural awardee of the Outstanding Mentorship Award from INEBRIA (the International Network on Brief Interventions for Alcohol and Other Drugs). The annual award was initiated this year in honor of colleague Richard Saitz, MD, MPH, and was announced at the 2022 INEBRIA conference in Edinburgh, Scotland, in September.

Also attending and presenting at the INEBRIA conference in Edinburgh in September were KPWHRI Research Interventionist Tessa Matson, PhD, Collaborative Scientist Jess Mogk, MPH, Collaborative Scientist Leah Hamilton, PhD, and Associate Investigator Joe Glass, PhD, MSW. Matson presented on designing trials to evaluate effectiveness and implementation of digital interventions for substance use. Mogk spoke about qualitative work on integrating digital therapeutics for alcohol use disorders into primary care. Glass presented about the DIGITS trial using digital therapeutics for opioids and other substance use disorders in primary care. Hamilton presented a poster on screening, brief intervention, and management of alcohol use disorders. She recently answered questions about her research at KPWHRI.
Cruz featured for Hispanic Heritage Month
Assistant Investigator Maricela Cruz, PhD, was profiled for the Lathisms Hispanic Heritage Month Calendar for 2022. (The organization's website explains that Lathisms stands for "Latinx and Hispanics in the Mathematical Sciences.") The profile covers Cruz's background growing up in El Monte, California, through her academic training at Pomona College and University of California Irvine, and current work in statistical methods in the KPWHRI biostatistics unit and as a University of Washington affiliate assistant professor.
Mogk presents about practice facilitation
In September, KPWHRI Collaborative Scientist Jess Mogk, MPH, gave a talk at the North American Primary Care Research Group International Practice Facilitation Conference in Savannah, Georgia. Her presentation was on technology and strategies for virtual practice facilitation. Mogk is an experienced practice facilitator who coaches clinical staff on quality improvement work. Mogk wrote for the Center for Accelerating Care Transformation (ACT Center) website about practice facilitation, her presentation, and her experience at the conference.
KPWHRI welcomes Will Smith
Will Smith, MBA, has joined KPWHRI to direct the Research Administration Business Unit, bringing nearly 2 decades of experience in pre- and post-award grant proposal development, award management, clinical trials, and contracts. Smith gained his experience at the University of Texas at Austin, Duke University, and NYU. He is an avid tennis player and fan, has 2 dogs, and supports animal health and rescue initiatives. Welcome, Will!
